I have recently joined the
Disquiet Junto group on Soundcloud curated by Marc Weidenbaum of the excellent
Disquiet webzine, which for many years has been an invaluable online resource of experimental music. As explained on the groups info page:
"The Disquiet Junto is a group based on Soundcloud.com where musicians respond to regularly scheduled, fast-turnaround assignments to compose, record, and share new music. The idea is to use restraints as a springboard for creativity. A project is announced each Thursday evening, and it is due the following Monday by 11:59pm (that's 11:59pm wherever you happen to be) ." I am finding the process to be really exciting as it requires me to work quickly to a short deadline (no time to procrastinate or overthink things until it ruins your initial idea, more of a challenge to do the best you can within the given timeframe ) so with that in mind I gave it a try, and came up with the tracks which you can listen to and download below. New tracks will be added to this post every time I complete a project...
I also have to say the experience so far has been an extremely positive one for me personally as the group is made up of a very amazing and talented bunch of people, each with their own unique creative approaches to sound who have come together under this forum to work on interesting sonic projects and to share them publicly for others to listen and discuss the process of how and why they created these pieces. In my opinion probably the most wonderful thing of all about this group is the amount of support , encouragement and respect they have shown to each other through their comments and discussions - it truly makes me feel honoured to be able to contribute my work and receive constructive feedback from people who have taken the time to listen and think about what they hear and also to do likewise for them - to hear such a diverse range of sounds / ideas and discuss the processes behind them is an invaluable and ongoing learning experience for those willing to put their ego aside and interact in a constructive and positive manner on an equal basis with their peers . It is also a great way of finding out about artists you may not have heard of who are doing some fantastic work worthy of your attention - I have made some great discoveries already and will definitely be seeking out their releases and showing my support however I can! I hope to continue to participate in as many of the projects from this group when time/opportunities permit and I highly, highly recommend it to other artists to join in and get involved as it is definitely a great motivational tool and most importantly - a lot of fun!
